BAXIAN PREHISTORIC SITE HOPES TO REMOVE LATER RELIGIOUS ARTEFACTS|
A court in Taitung recently ordered the relocation of a temple, together with its 93-year-old priest, from a local scenic site, after prehistoric relics dating back 30,000 years were found there, but cultural groups hold different views.
In Taiwan's east coast, Baxian Cave is famous for its dozens of natural sea caves. Some fifty or sixty years ago, temple staff placed religious statues in these caves for visitors to pray. However, archeologists found these caves are important prehistoric sites with thirty thousand years of prehistoric culture. According to the Cultural Heritage Preservation Act, displays in all caves must be removed for research purpose. The Chaoyin Cave is not cleared out because the 94-year-old abbot has difficulty moving displays by himself.

If government wants everything to go away, there is nothing I can do, right ?
==LU YU-LING, Dep. Dir., Taitung County Cultural Affairs Dept.==
We negotiated with Mr. Lai, when construction begins, we will relocate him to other place to live.
A local culture and history organization found that the Ministry of Culture plans to have Baxian Cave as the national historical site, which may result in no visitor at all if cutting out all the means of interaction and relation from the past.
==LI YU-FEN Dean, College of Humanities, Nat'l Taitung Univ.==
It's like that government is taking away the beauty of interactions between human and environment.

It is a continuous living matter, is there any possibility for them to co-exist in the cave?
The local culture and history organization pointed out, human living has been a continuous form since prehistory; they urge governments to consider keeping the temple and religious displays, and make the national historical site more suitable for human interests.
